Another rider appeared among the trees. A mysterious figure dressed in garments unlike anything from the mortal world. The stranger was also hunting the stag, and there was something unmistakably supernatural about him.
This figure was Arawn, the ruler of Annwn, the Welsh Otherworld, a mystical realm inhabited by spirits, magic, and ancient powers beyond human comprehension.
A Pact With the Otherworld
Rather than reacting with anger over the interrupted hunt, Arawn approached Pwyll with an unusual proposition. He explained that a rival threatened his rule over Annwn and asked Pwyll to take his place for a year and a day in order to defeat this enemy.
Through powerful magic, Pwyll and Arawn exchanged appearances and identities. Pwyll entered the Otherworld disguised as Arawn himself, becoming ruler of Annwn for the agreed time.
Despite entering a land governed by unfamiliar laws and supernatural forces, Pwyll ruled wisely and honourably. The people of Annwn quickly grew to respect him for his fairness and courage.
The Battle for Annwn
As the final day of the agreement approached, Pwyll was forced to face Arawn’s rival in single combat. The battle would determine the fate of the Otherworld itself.

Pwyll’s adventures did not end with Annwn. Later, he met and married Rhiannon, a woman of extraordinary beauty and mystery who was herself deeply connected to the Otherworld.
Their relationship became one of the most important stories in Welsh mythology. Together, they faced difficult trials, including the mysterious disappearance of their son — an event that brought sorrow and suspicion upon their household.
Yet through perseverance and fate, their child was eventually returned to them and would later grow into a great ruler.
